Key takeaways
GEO and AEO are built on SEO. There’s no separate trick.
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special optimization, just SEO fundamentals.
Blocking AI search crawlers can keep you out of AI answers entirely.
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of making your brand easy for AI tools to find, understand and recommend. It’s how you show up when someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Google’s AI for the best option in your category. Here’s what most guides skip: GEO, and its cousin AEO (answer engine optimization), are built on SEO. There’s no separate trick.
Why GEO matters now
Search used to end with ten blue links. Now, more and more searches end in a written answer. Google shows AI Overviews and AI Mode, and tools like ChatGPT search the web to answer questions.
That changes what “visible” means. An AI answer usually names a handful of options, not ten. If your business isn’t one of them, the person asking may never hear of you.
The good news: you don’t need to start from scratch. Most of what makes AI tools trust a brand is what makes Google trust it.
How AI tools decide what to say
When someone asks an AI assistant a question, the tool often searches the web, reads the most relevant pages, and writes an answer based on what it found. It may link to the sources it used.

That means three things decide whether you’re mentioned:
Can the AI reach your site? If its crawler is blocked, it can’t read your pages.
Does the web describe you clearly? Consistent facts about your business, on your site and elsewhere, make you easier to recommend.
Do your pages answer the question? Clear, direct answers are easier to quote than vague marketing copy.
GEO vs SEO: is there a difference?
Less than the name suggests. The work is the same; what changes is where the results show up.
SEO | GEO | |
Goal | Rank in search results | Be mentioned and cited in AI answers |
Where it shows | Google’s list of results | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, AI Overviews |
What success looks like | Rankings, clicks, traffic | Mentions, accurate descriptions, citations |
Foundation | Crawlable site, helpful content, trust | The same |
In short: GEO is SEO, measured in a new place. If your SEO is strong, you’ve already done most of the work.
What GEO actually involves
1. Let AI crawlers in
OpenAI says sites must allow its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to appear in ChatGPT search answers. Some sites block AI crawlers without meaning to, through a security setting or an old robots.txt rule. It takes minutes to check, and it can make a real difference.
2. Keep your SEO foundations strong
Google says pages only need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. There are no extra requirements, no special files and no special schema. If your pages aren’t indexed, they won’t show up in Google’s AI answers either.
3. Make your brand facts clear and consistent
AI tools build a picture of your business from many sources: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews and articles that mention you. When those sources agree on what you do, who you serve and where you are, you’re easier to describe accurately.
4. Write answer-ready content
Put the answer first. Use plain headings that match the questions people ask. Keep important information in text, not only in images or PDFs. These habits help human readers and AI tools alike.
5. Track what AI says about you
Ask the major AI tools the questions people ask about your industry, and note whether you’re mentioned, how you’re described and who’s recommended instead. Repeat it regularly, because answers change.

Common GEO myths
“GEO is a separate discipline.” It isn’t. GEO and AEO are SEO applied to AI answers. AI tools draw on the web, and SEO is how you earn a strong place on it.
“You need special AI files or markup.” Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema to appear in its AI features.
“You can pay to be recommended.” Organic AI answers aren’t for sale. You earn mentions by being findable, clear and credible.
Where to start
If you do three things this month, make them these:
Check that your robots.txt and security settings don’t block AI search crawlers.
Make sure your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console.
Ask ChatGPT and Gemini for the best option in your category and note who they name.
Then build from there: clear service pages, consistent business listings and content that answers real questions.
[Founder note: add a real example, such as what you found when you asked ChatGPT and Gemini about a business during an audit. First-hand detail like this is what Google says sets content apart.]
The bottom line
GEO rewards the same things good SEO always has: a site that’s easy to access, content that genuinely helps and a reputation the web agrees on. Get those right, and AI tools have every reason to recommend you.
Getting those right takes steady attention, because crawler settings change, listings drift and AI answers shift from month to month. That’s where Vantage comes in. We’re an AI-powered SEO agency, so we build the SEO that gets you ranking on Google and named in AI answers, then report on both in plain numbers.
