Key takeaways
AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same eligibility rules as regular Search.
Google says you don’t need new AI files or special markup to appear.
Pages blocked from crawling, or marked “noindex”, can’t be included.
To appear in Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, your page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search. That’s it. Google says there are no additional requirements, no special files and no special schema. What separates the pages that get cited is the same thing that separates pages that rank: access, quality and clarity.
What are AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear at the top of some Google results, with links to sources. AI Mode is a separate, conversational way to search Google, where people ask follow-up questions.
For businesses, both mean the same thing: more and more people read an AI summary before they click anything. Being one of the cited sources puts your brand in front of them early.
The eligibility path
Every page has to clear the same steps before it can be cited.

If a page fails any step, it can’t appear. Even when it passes, Google notes that inclusion isn’t guaranteed. Most problems we see happen at the first two.
A practical checklist
Make sure Google can crawl your pages
Google recommends allowing crawling in robots.txt and in any content delivery network or hosting service you use. Check that important pages aren’t blocked by mistake.
Make sure your pages are indexed
Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console to confirm each key page is indexed. Look for stray “noindex” tags, which tell Google to leave a page out.
Keep important content in text
Google advises making important content available in text. It also lists a good page experience among the fundamentals that still matter. If your key information only lives in an image, video or PDF, it’s harder to use.
Link to your important pages
Internal links help Google find content. Make sure your key service and guide pages are linked from your main navigation or from related pages.
Support text with images and video
Google suggests supporting your text with high-quality images and videos where they help. They make the page more useful to people, which is the point.
Keep your business information current
Google recommends keeping Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date. Accurate details help across Google’s surfaces.

What doesn’t help
Google is refreshingly direct about this. You don’t need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in these features. There’s no special schema.org markup required either. If you do use structured data, Google says it should match the visible text on the page.
That means time spent chasing “AI-only” tricks is usually better spent on fundamentals.
How to measure it
Sites that appear in AI features are counted in Search Console’s Performance report, under the “Web” search type. Watch impressions and clicks for the queries you care about.
It’s also worth running the searches yourself regularly and noting when your pages are cited.
Can you opt out?
Yes. Google offers controls such as “nosnippet” and “noindex” to limit how your content appears in Search, including AI features. Use them carefully: they also limit how you appear in regular results.
[Founder note: add a real eligibility issue you’ve found, like a stray noindex tag, and how it was fixed. First-hand detail like this is what Google says sets content apart.]
The bottom line
There’s no secret AI Overviews hack. Be crawlable, be indexed, be clear and be genuinely useful. The pages that do that consistently are the ones Google is most likely to cite.
If your pages aren’t being cited yet, the cause is usually fixable: a blocked page, an indexing error or an answer buried too deep. Finding and fixing those issues is a big part of what we do at Vantage, an AI-powered SEO agency. The same fixes that lift your Google rankings are what get you cited in AI answers.
